Guardiola Reflects on Southampton Win: "We Had To Suffer"
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed relief and praise for his team's resilience after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium. The win, secured by a late Erling Haaland goal, extended City's lead at the top of the Premier League table.
"It was a tough game, we had to suffer," Guardiola admitted in his post-match press conference. "Southampton were very well organized and made it difficult for us to create chances. We had to be patient and keep trying, and thankfully we found the goal in the end."
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances throughout the match, City struggled to break down Southampton's stubborn defense. The Saints, under the guidance of new manager Nathan Jones, adopted a resolute approach, pressing high and forcing City into errors.
"They are a very good team, they defend deep and they are very good at counter-attacking," Guardiola acknowledged. "We knew it would be a difficult game, but we are happy to get the three points."
Haaland's winning goal came in the 88th minute, a classic poacher's finish after Kevin De Bruyne's clever through ball. The Norwegian striker now has 27 goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season, further cementing his status as one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the world.
"Erling is a fantastic player, he has a natural instinct for scoring goals," Guardiola stated. "He is always in the right place at the right time and he is always a threat."
The win against Southampton maintains City's relentless pursuit of a third consecutive Premier League title. Guardiola's side now faces a crucial Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on Tuesday before a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool next weekend.
"We have a lot of important games coming up," Guardiola concluded. "We need to stay focused and keep working hard. This is a long season and we need to be ready for every challenge."
