More than just a religious observance, Finados is a deeply personal and emotional experience for many Brazilians. "Saudade," a profound feeling of longing, is a central theme in Finados. This Portuguese word has no direct English equivalent, encompassing a bittersweet mixture of nostalgia, sadness, and longing for someone or something absent. As one elderly woman poignantly expressed, "Saudade is worse than poverty."

This year, on a visit to a cemetery in São Paulo, we encountered several families who shared their stories and reflections.
